NINE SHOTS RANG OUT
Roanoke, Virginia

Backstreet Cafe is a neighborhood place. Smoky, friendly, it caters to a gay crowd, though nearly all the patrons here are in the closet. The notion of shootings there would have been like someone walking into your living room and opening fire.

Ronald Gay, was a man in on a mission to "waste some faggots." His whole life Gay had thought it unfair that he was the victim of anti-gay taunts, since he wasn't a homosexual. He had six wives to prove it.

As bar patrons were celebrating a commitment ceremony he fired into the crowd leaving one man dead and six others wounded. He confessed on videotape: "I came from the fag bar," he said. "I blew them away. The Lord told me to."

Here are four people whose lives were forever changed by that shooting.

Darlene - Lost her brother to a bullet in the heart Page - Shot in the head
Jonathan - Forced to leave home after revealing his gay lifestyle to his parents Anna & Sue - The last victims in Ronald Gay's gun sights
