DRAGGED THREE MILES
Jasper, Texas

On June 7, 1998, three white men chained a black man to the back of a pickup and dragged him to death. Even communities desensitized by today's video violence were stunned by the news. The gruesome crime and high-profile trial forced all Americas to look at their own prejudices. This is a glimpse into the trial of John William King, the ringleader of this historic crime, and the Texas town of Jasper where residents were forced to look in the mirror of their own civic conscience.

Assistant District Attorney, Pat Hardy displays the chain used to drag James Byrd Jr. The Byrd sisters reach for each other across the gap where their brother James—second to the oldest—would have stood.
William King started each morning wrapped in a 50,000-volt vest, his wrists manacled, court papers in hand. Hubert Leftney, father and Klan sympathizer
